History of Gambling in Czech Republic

Gambling in the Czech Republic goes way back to 1956 when Sazka SA was established, but in 1990 a new competitor arrived on the market, Tipsport, which offered sports betting services. These two were closely followed by Fortuna and Synop Tip. In 2012, new amendments were brought to the original gambling law as the Czech government tried to align with the European Commission but the new legislation backfired and caused a lot of disagreements.
 

In 2014, a new bill was issued to clarify the legal aspects of gambling in the country but this also got delayed up until 2017. Two years later, establishments with video poker machines and slot machines were also required to obtain a gambling license leading to the mass removal of these machines from grocery stores, pubs and cafes. 
 

Only in 2020, the gambling law started to actually take form as on the 1st of January, a new gambling tax of 23% on all revenues was introduced for casino operators.
